The Master's programme Ancient Studies does not adhere to disciplinary boundaries. It offers a unique combination of historical, literary, and archeological approaches from which the student can make a choice. In addition, it is possible to specialize in ancient philosophy or religion, and the study of one of the classical languages or Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian can be included in the programme.
The core courses of the programme are 'Great Debates in Ancient Historical Studies I and II', both of which introduce students to some of the most pertinent debates within the field and give due attention to interdisciplinary research. Depending on your interests, you can specialize in Ancient History, Archaeology, Ancient Thought and Religion, Latin or Greek Language and Culture, as well as Mesopotamian Language and Culture from the first millennium BC. Electives deal with themes such as Greek culture in Imperial Rome, City Life in the Roman Empire or Imagining the Divine in Context. It is also possible to include elective courses from the Master's programmes Archaeology, Ancient History and Classics.
